As a Licensed Denturist and former Vice President of the Idaho Denturitry Association, I've spent over a decade helping patients throughout the Treasure Valley master the art of wearing dentures comfortably. Whether you're getting dentures for the first time or looking to perfect your technique, I want to share everything I've learned about properly putting on dentures. At New Smile Dentures, where my family has served our community for over 60 years, we've helped thousands of patients transform their lives – and I'm here to help you do the same. If you're seeking more information about top denture providers in Boise, you can explore further to make the best choice for your needs.

Why proper denture placement matters to me – and should to you.
After managing denture clinics in both Caldwell and Boise, I've seen firsthand how proper placement technique can make the difference between a day of discomfort and a day of confidence. When you take those extra few moments to place your dentures correctly, you're preventing gum irritation, reducing the risk of denture stomatitis, and ensuring your dentures stay stable throughout your day.
I always tell my patients: proper placement means better speech, improved chewing, and most importantly, the confidence that comes with knowing your smile is secure. One of my recent patients put it perfectly: "I had several problems and Josh resolved all of my problems. He never charged me extra. I highly recommend New Smile for your dentures and partials. He really takes care of his clients after the purchase."
Before you begin: My essential preparation checklist
Clean your mouth first
I recommend starting each morning by gently cleaning your gums, tongue, and palate with a soft-bristled toothbrush. This simple step removes overnight bacteria and stimulates blood flow to your oral tissues. If you have any remaining natural teeth, brush them thoroughly with fluoride toothpaste. This routine helps prevent the issues I discuss in our article about preventing jawbone loss with dentures.
Inspect your dentures
Before putting your dentures in, examine them carefully for any cracks, chips, or rough spots. Even minor damage can cause significant discomfort. If you notice any issues, bring them to our clinic immediately – we offer same-day repair services at both our Caldwell and Boise locations. I personally oversee our in-house lab to ensure you're never without your smile for long.
Rinse your dentures
Always rinse your dentures with lukewarm water before putting them in. This removes any cleaning solution residue from overnight soaking. Never use hot water – I've seen too many dentures warped by hot water over the years. For more nighttime care tips, check our guide on whether you can sleep with dentures in.
My step-by-step guide: How to put dentures in for the first time
Putting on upper dentures
Over the years, I've developed this technique that works for virtually all my patients:
- Hold the denture properly: Grasp your upper denture with both hands, thumbs on the inside surface, fingers supporting the outside.
- Angle for insertion: Tilt the denture slightly, inserting the back teeth first at about a 45-degree angle – this is the key many people miss.
- Rotate into place: Once the back is positioned against your upper jaw, gently rotate the front down until it sits flush against your gums.
- Create the seal: Press firmly but gently upward with your thumbs along the entire denture base. You should feel that slight suction as air is expelled – that's when you know you've got it right.
- Test the fit: Close your mouth naturally and swallow. This helps seat the denture properly and creates optimal suction.
Putting on lower dentures
Lower dentures require a different approach – something I spend extra time teaching because they don't have the palate for suction:
- Position your tongue: Keep your tongue relaxed and slightly raised. Your tongue is actually your friend here, not an obstacle.
- Insert from the front: Unlike upper dentures, I recommend starting by placing the front teeth against your lower gums first.
- Rock back gently: Once the front is positioned, gently rock the denture back, allowing the rear portions to settle over your lower ridge.
- Press down evenly: Using your index fingers, apply gentle, even pressure along the entire denture.
- Let your tongue adjust: Your tongue actually helps hold lower dentures in place – let it find its natural position.

Common mistakes I see (And how to avoid them)
Never force dentures into place
If your dentures don't slide in easily, please don't force them. I've repaired countless dentures damaged this way. Remove them, check for any obstruction, and try again. If you're having persistent issues, come see me – it might be time for an adjustment.
Avoid biting dentures into position
This is probably the most expensive mistake I see. Biting down to force dentures into place creates uneven pressure that can crack or break them. While our in-house lab can repair damage quickly, I'd rather help you prevent it.
Don't use excessive adhesive
If you need lots of adhesive, your dentures don't fit properly – it's that simple. At New Smile Dentures, I ensure proper fit from the start. Our conventional dentures are crafted for superior stability without relying heavily on adhesives.

Your first week: What I tell all my new patients
Days 1-3: Initial adjustment
- Increased saliva production is completely normal
- You'll struggle with "s" and "f" sounds – everyone does
- Some soreness as gums adjust is expected
- Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soup
Days 4-7: Building confidence
- Saliva production begins normalizing
- Speech becomes clearer with practice (I promise!)
- Gradually introduce semi-solid foods
- Establish your morning and evening routine
As one of my patients recently said: "Terrific support at every level! Entire staff is personable and professional. I'm so blessed to have been referred here by my oral surgeon after struggling with finding dentures that work."
My pro tips for mastering denture placement
Start with soft foods
During your first few weeks, I recommend soft foods cut into small pieces. Here's what works for my Treasure Valley patients:
- Scrambled eggs and oatmeal for breakfast
- Soups and pasta for lunch
- Tender cooked vegetables and fish for dinner
Practice speaking daily
I always suggest reading aloud for 10-15 minutes daily. My Idaho patients have success with:
- Reading the newspaper each morning
- Calling friends and family
- Singing along to favorite songs (yes, really!)
Stay hydrated
Dry mouth makes everything harder. Keep water handy and consider an alcohol-free mouthwash designed for denture wearers.
Use a mirror
When you're learning, use a well-lit bathroom mirror. It helps you see the correct angles and ensures even placement.
When to come see me or Nick at New Smile Dentures
While minor adjustments are normal, these signs mean you need my help:
- Persistent sore spots after two weeks
- Dentures feeling loose despite proper placement
- Difficulty speaking or eating that doesn't improve
- Clicking sounds when talking or chewing
- Changes in fit from day to day
Our in-house lab allows me to make most adjustments while you wait – often the same day!
Special considerations for immediate dentures
If you're receiving immediate dentures after tooth extraction, I'll give you extra care during healing. Learn more in our guide on gums healing with dentures.
My immediate denture placement tips:
- Your gums will be tender and swollen initially
- Expect more frequent adjustments during the 6-8 week healing period
- Follow my specific instructions for placement timing
- Don't remove immediate dentures for the first 24 hours unless I tell you to
- I'll see you at weeks 1, 2, 4, and 8 for optimal comfort
Why regular check-ups matter to me.
Even when your dentures feel perfect, I want to see you regularly. Your mouth naturally changes over time. I recommend:
- Every 6 months: Professional evaluation and cleaning
- Annually: Comprehensive oral health assessment
- As needed: Free adjustments for my existing patients
During these visits at our Caldwell or Boise clinics, I can identify and address minor issues before they become major problems.
Your morning routine (What I do myself)
Here's the routine I recommend:
- 6:30 AM: Remove dentures from overnight soak
- 6:35 AM: Brush gums and remaining teeth
- 6:40 AM: Rinse dentures with lukewarm water
- 6:45 AM: Insert dentures using proper technique
- 6:50 AM: Test fit with gentle movements
- 7:00 AM: Enjoy breakfast with confidence
